Fist_Art Foundation’s Art in Golf exhibition creates a completely new concept for the enjoyment of art, showcasing golf courses as eco-museums. This opportunity offers full innovation for the artist and the players, setting the artwork outside, and changing the traditional vision of what museums or golf landscapes should look like. By reinventing what is traditionally known in golf and in art, Fist_Art foundation explores new horizons in specialized art concepts designed to celebrate contemporary art and to reach the public eye.

In this demonstration the works of six artists will be exposed: Rafael Trelles, Jesús “Bubu” Negrón, Chemi Rosado, Jaime and Javier Suárez, Cristina Salas, and Anaitté Vaccaro as a special guest artist. These artists sometimes enact an ecological speech and at others, a conceptual or poetic one, in which the reflection on the relationship between art and nature prevails, within the golf traditional framework. Dr. Rafael Jackson composes the expo’s curatorial text using a coherent and accessible discourse for the general public. Due to the perishable nature of the artwork, the documentation process during the realization of the piece and the iconic picture transcend the experience of the artwork itself through the use of the image. La permanencia efímera del Land Art

Con casi seis décadas desde que se originó en Estados Unidos, en medio de las rupturas artísticas de los años 60, y a la búsqueda de un nuevo paradigma creativo que alejara la obra de su característica objetual, el ¨Land Art¨ o arte de la tierra sigue vigente sin que se le considere una manifestación agotada.

Intervenir o alterar el paisaje como medio creativo para provocar una reacción, donde prevalece la relación del hombre con la tierra y su medio ambiente, convirtió entonces esta modalidad en una de las nuevas vía para denotar el significante en ¨la obra de arte¨.

Es así como la acumulación de piedras -en un lago de Utah- que forman un espiral en la pieza de 1970, ¨Spiral Jetty¨, del artista estadounidense Robert Smithson, se convierte en una de las obras precursoras de tal movimiento y todavía hoy se le toma como referencia por artistas contemporáneos.

“Todo el arte contemporáneo desde 1950 nos dice que la obra de arte no reside en el objeto,  porque no nos va a hablar necesariamente. Es la reflexión    sobre ella¨, destaca Tonia Raquejo, catedrática de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y profesora titular de Teoría e Historia del Arte Contemporáneo.

Raquejo, quien visitó Puerto Rico como conferenciante invitada para hablar de la experiencia estética de la naturaleza a través del arte efímero, convocada por la Fundación Fist Art, comenta que los artistas siguen encontrando en el Land Art un medio idóneo para lograr la participación del espectador, tanto en la fase procesal de la intervención como en el resultado ¨final¨ de la pieza.

Pero recuerda que el arte de la tierra no necesariamente concluye con el trabajo del artista, sino que una de sus características es la participación del medio ambiente, de las condiciones climáticas, que también dejan sentir su peso sobre la obra, hasta cambiarla o degradarla como parte de un proceso orgánico.

Raquejo destaca que ese habitar natural de la obra no riñe con las nuevas tecnologías, que le sirven al artista para usar sofisticadas maquinarias con las que puede intervenir la tierra o los materiales naturales que emplee. Igual, puntualiza que ¨hay partes que no están nada reñidas con la tecnología, se monitorean las personas mientras se realiza la obra, se puede ver la obra en tiempo real en otros lugares e interactuar con otras personas y esto hace accesible su proceso creativo¨.

Además, al consistir de piezas efímeras, queda la documentación del proceso y la obra a través del vídeo y la fotografía. ¨Esto no es la experiencia, porque es parte de un acto efímero con un tiempo específico, pero en la documentación queda la experiencia estética y se puede apreciar esta otra parte¨, agrega la profesora, quien ostenta un grado de doctorado en arte.

Cuando se le pregunta sobre la evolución del Land Art y cómo lo toman o lo replantean los artistas contemporáneos, Raquejo indica que al presente ¨la obra se inserta en lugares más asequibles, con más personas a las que llega. Antes era en lugares de menos población, o desérticos, y menos accesibles¨.

Mientras, al indagar en las fronteras que puedan existir al presente entre el Land Art y otras manifestaciones artísticas, en vista de los postulados de algunos artistas en el pasado quienes entendían la creación del arte de la tierra debía ser lo más natural posible, la estudiosa sostiene que ya eso no es así.

¨Dentro del arte contemporáneo yo no le veo ninguna frontera¨, indica Raquejo, y establece que en el proceso creativo se utilizan maquinarias, diversos instrumentos, tecnología, y se siguen utilizando manifestaciones como el performance y el arte sonoro, entre otros.

Según la Catedrática de la Universidad Complutense, en España y en Europa, varios artistas con trayectoria y emergentes, siguen trabajando el Land Art con propuestas que no solo son referenciales a piezas reconocidas del movimiento, sino que evocan nuevas creaciones, y que aluden en una cantidad significativa a las preocupaciones actuales por la conservación del medioambiente.

En Puerto Rico, la conferencia de Raquejo surgió en el contexto de la muestra ¨Archivos de lo efímero, diez intervenciones artísticas en la naturaleza¨, que recoge la documentación de diez artistas que han realizado proyectos en Dorado apoyados por la Fundación Fist Art, originada en 2008 por Carolina Stubbe. La exposición se presentó hasta el 15 de noviembre en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón en Santurce.

Fist_Art Foundation celebrates the success of its exhibition: Archives of the Ephemeral, Ten Artistic Interventions in Nature, opened Thursday October 11, 2012, at the University of Sagrado Corazon’s Art Room. Open calls for the critical essay contest will be extended until the first week of February 2013, for current college students. Contest’s rules are found below. Fist_Art foundation’s objective is to stimulate the alumni’s ability for critical analysis and expression, in this case through art.

The show will be open to general public until November 15, 2012, then, it will be promptly relocated at the “Escuela de Bellas Artes de Ponce” (Ponce’s School of Fine Arts), located in Lolita Tizol St. #20, in the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico, for everyone’s enjoyment.

Objetivos

• Desarrollar en los alumnos la capacidad de reflexionar y de analizar un tema específico, en este caso la exposición titulada: “Archivos de lo efímero, diez intervenciones artísticas en la naturaleza”.
• Incentivar al estudiante a manifestar su juicio crítico, sus pensamientos y sus reflexiones a través de la escritura.
• Motivar a los estudiantes de diversas disciplinas académicas a visitar la exposición “Archivos de lo efímero, diez intervenciones artísticas en la naturaleza”.

Bases

• Podrán participar todos los estudiantes de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón de cualquier grado académico y facultad.
• El estudiante deberá presentar un ensayo crítico original e inédito, en castellano o inglés, sobre el “arte efímero” como tema base, o en relación con la exhibición.
• Deben entregarse tres duplicados, debidamente identificadas con nombre del estudiante, dirección, teléfono y correo electrónico. Éstos no serán devueltos una vez culminado el concurso. A su vez, deberá remitir el ensayo por correo electrónico, en formato PDF, a la dirección: info@fistart.org. El título del correo debe indicar “Concurso”.
• Junto con los documentos originales, el participante ha de presentar una copia de su identificación de estudiante.

Criterios de evaluación

• Capacidad crítica y de análisis del tema “arte efímero” especialmente realizado en la naturaleza con énfasis en las obras presentadas en la exposición.
• Coherencia en el desarrollo del tema circunscrito a la exposición y a los temas afines.
• Originalidad, pensamiento propio, capacidad reflexiva y criterios de investigación serios y profundos.

Entrega

• Sala de las Artes A, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, de martes a viernes, de 10 a.m. a 4 p.m.
• Tipografía: Verdana 12, interlineado 1.5.
• Extensión entre 500 y 700 palabras.
• La participación en este certamen implica que el o la participante acepta las características y bases que lo rigen.
• Al participar se ceden los derechos de edición, reproducción, distribución y difusión de la obra, así como su divulgación en el portal de la Fundación, otorgando siempre el debido crédito a su autor.

Plazo de entrega del ensayo

Los escritos se deben presentar en o antes del 5 de noviembre de 2012.

Entrega del laudo

El acto de entrega del laudo y de otorgación del premio se efectuará el 15 de noviembre de 2012 en la Sala de las Artes A, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, a las 7:00 p.m.

Premio único

• Tras el escrutinio de las obras, un Jurado seleccionará el escrito ganador.
• La dotación económica del certamen es de $300.00 al mejor escrito.
• Se otorgarán menciones honoríficas.
• El fallo del jurado será inapelable.
• El premio podrá ser declarado desierto.

Open Call Art Critique Contest

Fist Art is a nonprofit foundation that promotes the arts through site-specific works of art, community proposals, and excellent education programs, located in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Its mission is to explore the ways to converge art with nature, developing art projects with local and international artists that explore the environment and the landscape as dynamic medium that forms an integral part of our society.

In this demonstration the works of ten artists will be exposed; seven Puerto Ricans: Rafael Trelles, Dhara Rivera, Pseudo Mero, Vimarie Serrano, Manuel Rodríguez, Jaime and Javier Suárez, Quintín Rivera Toro, and other international artists like Teresa Mulet from Venezuela, Myeongbeom Kim de Korea, and the American, Miya Ando (who comes from a Russian and Japanese origin), whom have accomplished Land Art pieces and installations in open spaces in Dorado. These artists sometimes enact an ecological speech and at others, a conceptual or poetic one, in which reflection on the relationship between art and nature prevails. Due to the perishable nature of the artwork, the documentation process during the realization of the piece and the iconic picture transcend the experience of the artwork itself through the use of the image.

Dr. Laura Bravo López composes the expo’s curatorial text using a coherent and accessible discourse for the general public. Meanwhile, as part of the foundation’s educational programming, a conference on Land Art by Dr. Tonia Raquejo, Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, will be held on November 1, 2012 at the Sagrado Corazón University’s Art Room.

fist_ART.Foundation along with the Priscilla Gonzalez Rahola de Stubbe Foundation are pleased to join efforts to raise funds for the publication of the book Gabriel Berriz, El Poeta del Paisaje. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a project that will become a collector’s piece and a true legacy for future generations. As homage to his life and work, master artist Antonio Martorell has created a unique xylography available for acquisition that captures Gabriel Berriz visionary mind.

Gabriel Berriz’s passion and respect for life and nature is reflected in each and every one of his projects. The book will be a journey through Berriz’s most emblematic and enigmatic creations in a continuous thread that combines his personal and professional history. Gabriel Berriz, El Poeta del Paisaje will be the product of a series of interviews, scholarly research and autobiographical stories. The book will reflect the unique aesthetic and true genius of the spaces conceived by our poet of the landscape, Gabriel Berriz.

Ando’s intention is to communicate a poetic notion of interconnectivity and create an opportunity to quietly take notice of the beauty in nature and the universal transitoriness in life. Her hope is to create an environment of serene reflection, wonder and peacefulness in the site location of Dorado, Puerto Rico.

As part of the series of site-specific installations by the fist_ART.Foundation, Obonmakes use if the natural material found at Dorado Beach to create Land Art water work. Creating a dialogue on reusable energies and the natural phenomena of bioluminescence in Puerto Rico. A conference with the artist will be held on May 24, 2012 at 5:30pm at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC).

As Ando explains: “This piece is inspired by the ancient Japanese festival of Obon, a ceremony to honor and commemorate the departed. Obon is an ancient event, in which it is believed that during this 3 day ceremony the spirits of one’s departed family members and ancestors return to the home and are reunited with their loved ones, as lanterns are floated on rivers to guide the spirits back to the netherworld”

Miya Ando is an internationally acclaimed artist whose high profile public commissions and unique artwork have been called ‘A Must See’ by the New York Times.  Half Japanese & half Russian, Ando is a descendant of Bizen sword makers was raised in a Buddhist temple in Japan. In 2011 she completed two memorial sculptures for the 9/11 in which she utilized 30 foot tall pieces of steel, which had fallen from the World Trade Center Buildings.

Ando’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Paris, Berlin, Australia and Tokyo. Miya’s public commissions include projects in South Korea, London, New York and California. She is the recipient of the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant in 2012, the Thanatopolis Special Artist Award and Public Outdoor Commission Winner and Puffin Foundation Grant winner in 2010.
